Armenia’s CEC: Pashinyan’s Civil Contract Party Leads

Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has released the preliminary results of the country’s parliamentary elections. According to the commission, the ruling Civil Contract party of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is leading with 57.14% of the vote.

In second place is the opposition “Strong Armenia” bloc, led by Samvel Karapetyan, a Russian businessman of Armenian descent — according to the commission, this political force has secured 21.43%.

Followed by:

  • the “Armenia” bloc of former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan — 8.21%;
  • the “Prosperous Armenia” party of businessman Gagik Tsarukyan, which also enters parliament — 5.1%.

The CEC reported that voter turnout stood at 58.97% — higher than the turnout in the 2018 and 2021 parliamentary elections.

No official exit poll was conducted in Armenia on June 7, the day of the parliamentary elections.

A total of 18 political forces participated in the parliamentary elections — 2 blocs and 16 parties. There were 2,485,851 eligible voters in Armenia. The country’s legislature is elected under a proportional representation system. The electoral threshold is 4% for parties and 8% for blocs.

The Parliament of Armenia (National Assembly) consists of 105 deputies, with 4 seats reserved for representatives of national minorities — Yazidis, Russians, Kurds, and Assyrians.

Media outlets point out that to achieve a lasting peace, Azerbaijan is demanding changes to Armenia’s constitution, which currently contains a reference to “reunification with Nagorno-Karabakh.”

This would require a referendum, which can only be held with the approval of two-thirds of the Armenian parliament, while the main opposition forces remain opposed to the move.
