Georgian Prime Minister congratulates Armenian counterpart on his party’s victory

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has congratulated his Armenian counterpart Nikol Pashinyan on the victory of the ruling Civil Contract party in the parliamentary elections held in Armenia on June 7.

“Heartfelt congratulations to PM Nikol Pashinyan on his party’s success in the elections. Looking forward to continuing our close cooperation to strengthen the strategic partnership and friendly relations between Georgia and Armenia for the prosperity of our nations,” the Georgian Prime Minister wrote on X.

Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has released the preliminary results of the country’s parliamentary elections. According to the commission, the ruling Civil Contract party of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is leading with 57.14% of the vote.

In second place is the opposition bloc “Strong Armenia”, led by Samvel Karapetyan, a Russian businessman of Armenian descent. According to the election administration, the political force has secured 21.43%.

The CEC reported that voter turnout stood at 58.97%, which is higher than the turnout in the 2018 and 2021 parliamentary elections.

No official exit polls were conducted in Armenia on June 7, the day of the parliamentary elections.

A total of 18 political forces—two blocs and 16 parties—contested the parliamentary elections. There were 2,485,851 eligible voters in Armenia. The country’s legislature is elected under a proportional representation system. The electoral threshold is set at 4% for parties and 8% for blocs.

The Armenian Parliament (National Assembly) consists of 105 deputies, with four seats reserved for representatives of national minorities—Yezidis, Russians, Kurds, and Assyrians.

Media outlets point out that Azerbaijan, as a condition for lasting peace, is demanding changes to the Armenian Constitution, which currently contains a reference to “reunification with Nagorno-Karabakh.”

This would require a referendum, which can only be initiated with the approval of a two-thirds majority in the Armenian Parliament, while the main opposition forces strongly oppose the move.
