“Dream” Wants a New Partnership Format with the US

Nikoloz Samkharadze, a Georgian Dream MP and chairman of the parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, stated that “Dream” aims to elevate relations with the US to an unprecedented level.

The lawmaker explained that Ivanishvili’s party is trying not just to reset relations with Washington, but to “raise them to a level that has never existed before.”

“We often say that we are not satisfied with and do not want the strategic partnership agreement that existed previously.

When I was visiting the US in March, by the way, I was asked whether we wanted to restore the previous partnership.

Ultimately, we replied that the previous partnership makes no sense. It is better to develop a new partnership agreement that will be beneficial to both sides,” Samkharadze stated.

As a reminder, in late March 2026, the first phone call took place between the Prime Minister of Georgia and the US Secretary of State. This marked the first full-fledged communication between Irakli Kobakhidze and a high-ranking US State Department official after a prolonged pause in Georgian-American relations, which Georgian Dream blames on the previous administration under President Joe Biden, citing the influence of the “Deep State.”

At the time, Kobakhidze noted that the sides “emphasized the importance of renewing our partnership and strengthening Georgia’s role as a reliable partner in the South Caucasus.”

The Prime Minister of Georgia, responding to a question about Georgian-American relations in mid-February 2026, stated that Tbilisi had already repeatedly expressed its position regarding Washington. Georgia is ready to resume its strategic partnership with the US—this is a “very clear position, and we are waiting for reciprocal steps,” he added.

Kobakhidze emphasized that the country’s authorities would wait for reciprocal steps from the Trump administration for as long as necessary, noting that the resumption of relations with the United States depends on the American side.

US-Georgia relations leave much to be desired—the previous administration of President Joe Biden imposed sanctions against the founder of Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili, as well as against former Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri and former Deputy Director of the Special Tasks Department (STD, special forces) Mirza Kezevadze for crackdowns on participants of pro-European protests.

In addition, the strategic partnership between the two countries has been suspended.

Cooperation persists—primarily in the areas of security, defense, and economic assistance. Washington continues to support Georgia’s territorial integrity and its path toward integration into NATO and the EU. Joint military exercises and training programs for Georgian forces are conducted regularly.
