Giorgi Gakharia, leader of the opposition party “Gakharia for Georgia”, who is currently outside the country and does not intend to return in the near future, published a post stating that while the Georgian authorities are busy “spreading lies on international platforms to mask reality,” his political force under his leadership is defending the national interests, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Georgia during a visit to the OSCE PA in The Hague.
“During my working visit to the OSCE PA in The Hague, I am holding crucial meetings with the OSCE leadership, international partners, and delegations that have supported Georgia for decades.
While the Georgian government is busy spreading lies on international platforms to mask reality, we are doing what they refuse to do: defending the national interests, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Georgia.
Following empty promises of reunification and shameful apologies to the occupiers, the Georgian Dream party is trying to force society to accept both the loss of our occupied territories and the destruction of our European future. This is nothing short of collaborationism.
In the face of government inaction, our priority in The Hague is to mobilize partners against the accelerating processes of annexation in Georgia’s occupied territories, especially in the Tskhinvali region over the past three months.
Together with my team, I will continue to fight for Georgia’s European future and territorial integrity,” the opposition politician wrote.
As a reminder, Giorgi Gakharia is currently outside Georgia. He left the country in the spring of 2025 and, according to reports, is in Europe, presumably in Germany. In September 2025, the politician stated that he did not plan to return to Georgia in the near future.
Gakharia served as Prime Minister of Georgia from 2019 to 2021, and prior to that, he was the Minister of Internal Affairs. Following his resignation as head of government, he founded the opposition party “Gakharia for Georgia.”
In November 2025, while already abroad, Gakharia became a suspect in a criminal case. The Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia launched an investigation against him under charges of “organizing the intentional infliction of grave bodily harm” during the so-called “Gavrilov’s Night” on June 20, 2019, and “abuse of official power” in the so-called “Chorchana case” involving the setup of a checkpoint.
On November 11, 2025, the prosecution officially charged Gakharia, and on November 12 of the same year, the Tbilisi City Court ordered his pre-trial detention in absentia.
Representatives of the “Gakharia for Georgia” party and other opposition forces call the politician’s prosecution politically motivated and argue that it is part of the pressure on opponents of the government. The Georgian government rejects these accusations, stating that the case is of an exclusively legal nature and that Gakharia must stand trial upon his return to the country.
