Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation (Sovbez), stated that certain nations are attempting to divide the countries of the South Caucasus and sour Russia’s relations with Armenia. He made the remarks in an interview with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
“As for the Caucasus, yes, certain states are currently trying to stir things up there. They are seeking to divide the countries of the South Caucasus. That is true. We are watching this with caution.”
To illustrate his point, the deputy head of the Russian Security Council cited the West’s relations with Georgia and the ongoing situation surrounding Armenia.
“Look. First, the Western world offered Georgia NATO membership. Nothing good came of it. Georgia is still not a member of NATO. Its current leadership understands that this was, apparently, the wrong approach. All of this led to conflict. Right now, our relations with Armenia are being put to the test,” Medvedev said.
